Population

The Santa Fe Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 53,756 in 1970 to 144,168 in 2010. That was an increase of 168.2 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 682 in 1970 to 18,968 in 2010. That was an increase of 2681.2 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.3 percent to 13.2 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 135.9 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in adding population in the two latest periods, and NDM was in that role in the first period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the principal factor in added population in the most recent two periods.
